Orwell's American Dream

"Big Brother is watching.” We've all heard that phrase when discussing our government, no matter who's in charge. But at that time, we could at least take solace in the knowledge that there were laws and restrictions that would protect the privacy of American citizens.

Unfortunately, that solace has been stripped away over the last five years. Earlier this week, we also learned that the Department of Defense has been infiltrating "terrorist" organizations within our borders. Such "terrorist" organizations include war protestors, peaceniks, civil rights activists and those absolutely menacing Quakers. Little old ladies in Florida baking cookies and talking about being against the war is now a "terrorist threat".

And Friday, the National Security Agency (NSA) was exposed for spying on American citizens without a warrant. Apparently, this order came directly from President Bush himself. Doing this is illegal, flies in the face of our Constitution and is definitely an impeachable offense. But then again, he's done a lot of illegal and impeachable deeds since he's been in office. But with our current climate of fear and fear mongering, we will allow a President to act more like a Czar in order to "protect us from terrorism". Seems like my definition of terrorism differs from the White House.

We are going down a very dangerous path in this country. It's time that we end this culture of fear and take back our rights as Americans. As Benjamin Franklin once said, "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

War On Christmas? More Like A War On Common Sense.

Oh please. War on Christmas? You've got to be kidding me. Is this the new shiny thing the phony Christian leaders like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and James Dobson dangle in front of their flocks in order to separate their cash from their wallets? I would say it is.

With all the problems we are having in this country, this is the most pressing issue in some Christians' minds? Are you kidding me? When I first heard this, I thought it was a joke. I thought, "Someone is doing a holiday gag or something. Maybe it's a spoof from John Stewart or something?" But to my horror and amazement, this was for real.

Happy Holidays! Season's Greetings! If you got upset by reading those last two sentences, you really need to get a grip, take a deep breath, clear your mind and turn off Fox News. With Bill O'Lielly whipping this up every night as well as some other right-wing pundits on television and radio following along, people are actually starting to believe that Jesus Christ is an underdog in America.

That's right, Jesus is a twenty-to-one underdog in the latest Vegas betting line. So send your money to Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and James Dobson, keep tuning in to Bill O'Lielly and take yourself off the Missouri "No-Call" list because you could help the economy. How so? If you buy this act, you would buy anything from a telemarketer.

The Truth Reborn

Alright, here's the deal. I've decided that what I'm going to do is post all of the letters-to-the-editor that I submit to the Columbia Missourian, Columbia Tribune and other newspapers in the state of Missouri. I may submit some of my "good ones" to major newspapers like the New York Times, L.A. Times and Chicago Tribune.

The first submission will be posted tomorrow, December 13 and it will deal with the apropo subject of "The War on Christmas". I will at the same time submit that post to the newspapers I listed above. I'll update the post to the online newspaper link if it gets published. Hopefully soon, I'll be writing weekly op-eds for the Tribune. Stay tuned. It should be fun.
